How to Help Your Baby Sleep: Practical & Gentle Strategies That Work

👶 By Bregje van Breugel, Infant Sleep Coach, bpositivecoaching.org🛏 1. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment
Keep it dark
Even dim light can disrupt a baby’s sleep cycle by interfering with melatonin production (the sleep hormone). Use blackout blinds or improvise with bin bags and tape—whatever works.
Use white noise
Babies are used to constant noise in the womb. White noise mimics that and helps block out random household sounds. It also signals that sleep time has begun.
Watch the temperature
The ideal baby sleep temperature is 20–22°C (68–72°F). Overheating or letting the room get too cold can disrupt sleep.
2. Establish a Consistent Routine
Babies thrive on predictability. A simple baby bedtime routine can help cue their body and mind for rest.
Start small
Even newborns can benefit from a short routine: think nappy change, feed, lullaby. It helps wind them down and gives you both some calm connection time.
Daytime sleep matters too
One of the most common misconceptions is that less sleep during the day means more at night. In fact, overtired babies often wake more. Short naps lead to long nights.
Feed enough during the day
Making sure your baby is well-fed during the day supports longer, more restful stretches at night.
🌙 3. Support Self-Settling (Without Pressure)
If you're wondering how to teach a baby to self-settle gently, here’s what that can
look like:
Drowsy, not fully asleep
Try placing your baby in their cot or bassinet when they’re sleepy but still slightly awake. Over time, they’ll begin learning how to drift off on their own.
Pause before rushing in
Babies often grunt, stir, or even cry briefly between sleep cycles. Give it a minute— many settle back without needing help.
Offer gentle reassurance
If they do need you, try shushing, patting, or rubbing their tummy. Self-soothing is a learned skill—it takes practice, and you're their guide.
💛 Don’t Forget About You
This part is crucial, and often overlooked.
Share the load
Where possible, take turns with night feeds or settling, so one parent isn’t running on empty. It also helps your baby learn to settle with both of you.
Prioritise your own rest
Yes, the housework can wait. A rested parent is more present, more patient—and better able to cope with the demands of a new baby.
Manage expectations
There’s no gold star for having the “perfect sleeper.” Sleep regressions, teething, illness, travel—all of these can disrupt things. Consistency matters, but flexibility matters too.
A Final Word from Me
The baby sleep world is full of opinions—and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But helping your baby sleep better doesn’t have to involve harsh methods or unrealistic routines. You can support healthy sleep gently, respectfully, and gradually.
If you’re tired, frustrated, or just need reassurance, know that support is out there. And if you ever want to talk, I’m here.

"Bregje; Your grace and patience with us have borne great fruit, not just our daughter's life, but our family life overall. We are so thankful.""Dear Miss B. Thank you for being an important part of our son's early development. When you first started working with him, he pointed to things and vocalized a uniform "ahhh" for everything, often getting frustrated. Now he tells little stories as he plays with his Legos, and reports who got time-out that day at preschool!.""Our child's growth is a testament to your ability to create a playful, safe and language rich environment that allowed the "light bulb" of language to go off for him.""We have been so blessed to work with you through this Early Intervention program. Thanks for helping our daughter make such amazing progress while her older brothers coming and out and us trying to balance home and work life.""Miss B. Thank you for playing with me."
